'Paisan' Organic Pepperoncini Bred by Johnny's

Today we're out here in the 'Paisan' pepperoncini seed production in Albion, Maine, near the Johnny's home farm.

This project was started around five years ago, in 2018 or 2019, and it was joint work between the product development and trials team at Johnny's and the breeding team. The goal of this project, was to get a real nice uniform pepperoncini pickling pepper. What we had noticed was that the varieties that were being sold on the market tended to have fruits that were, not uniform in shape or size and plants that were very floppy. So our goal was to get real nice, straight, uniform fruits like this that were good for pickling at about three and a half to four inches, and then a plant that was relatively, upright and less floppy than it had been.

It still has a very floppy plant. As you can see from the string here, we did a little bit of trellising or basket weaving to keep them upright to improve the fruit quality. We still suggest doing that, but the plant type is still better than the other pepperoncinis you see in the market.
