'Rococo Frilled Mix' Viola From Johnny's

This is 'Rococo Frilled Mix'. This variety has been planted in an overwintered, unheated tunnel. These plants went in the ground on October 6th. They spent the winter in the tunnel. As the days started to lengthen and the temperatures increased in late March and early April, the stems started to elongate.

This variety is a little bit of a later one for us for harvesting out of the overwintered tunnel. It's a little slower than some of the smaller-flowered varieties that tend to be a little bit faster to stretch. This is the first week of May, and we've just started harvesting off this variety this week.

One thing that is nice about it as a cut is that the stems tend to be nice and thick and sturdy, which you can see hopefully from this bunch. While it may not be quite as productive as some of the smaller-flowered or earlier varieties, the stems that we do harvest again tend to be of good quality, even if there aren't quite as many of them.

A couple of other unique things about this variety are the frilled bloom form. Most of the plants in this variety will have some sort of wave or ruffle to the petal, and there's also a really nice, rich, saturated color palette to this mix. This variety does have a light fragrance to it as well.

One final thing to know about this variety is that if you are growing it outside of a tunnel environment, if you're planting it in the ground for landscape or bedding or in a container, the habit will be more compact, shorter. You'll still see the same bloom size and shape and form and fragrance and nice color mix. The stems just won't elongate for cut flowers.
