'Floral Power Plum Antique' Viola From Johnny's

This is 'Floral Power Plum Antique'.

This is a viola variety that was planted in October in an unheated tunnel. These overwintered in the tunnel. When the days started to lengthen and the temperatures warmed in late March and early April, the plants started to stretch and elongate and reach the height that you can see here. This variety is one of the earlier varieties to elongate in the overwintered tunnel for us.

We were able to start harvesting off this in the middle of April, and it's now the first week of May. You can see we've been able to harvest flowers of this variety for a couple of weeks now. You can see what the stems look like here on these.

One thing I will say about this variety grown in the overwintered tunnel, if you were to plant it outside in a garden bed or in a field or in a container, I would not expect it to stretch or elongate like this. The habit would stay more compact, but it would still have the same bloom quality and same fragrance and flower form—just one difference to note there.

In terms of the flower shape and size, the blooms are small but abundant and typically 1 to 1.5 inches wide and tall. This variety is lightly fragrant and again one of the early or fastest varieties to elongate for us in the overwintered tunnel.
