Climate Adaptation in Action

About Our Presenters
Julie FineJulie Fine, Climate and Agriculture Specialist for American Farmland Trust, worked on dairy and vegetable farms for many years before settling in western Massachusetts. In 2018, she earned an MS in plant and soil science from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass Amherst researching the effects of winter-killed cover crops on nutrient cycling, weed suppression, and soil health. Julie is dedicated to working with farmers towards site-specific solutions for climate adaptation, soil health, and sustainable food production.
Sara KelemenSara Kelemen, New England Soil Health Specialist for American Farmland Trust, is driven by a desire to work with farmers of all types towards improved farm resilience in the face of a changing climate. She has been a Fellow with the USDA Northeast Climate Hub running peer-to-peer climate focused programs for farmers and service providers, and received a MS in Plant, Soil, and Environmental Science from the University of Maine in 2021. Sara has worked on vegetable and cut flower farms in Maine and California, and currently lives in the midcoast region of Maine.
Sal DaggettSal Daggett is a freelance writer, culinary educator, and land steward at Stubborn Oak Farmstead, a neurodivergent-led intergenerational farm in the prairie pothole region of western Wisconsin. They raise pastured heritage-breed pork and specialty vegetables including garlic, ginger, and peppers. Their agroecological farm blends wildlife habitat with food production, on-farm classes, and art. Visitors are welcome to the farm to learn more about their mission of connecting people through food.
Kyle Forrest BurnsKyle Forrest Burns, affectionately known as the "Tomato Papa" and "Garlic Wizard," is the farmer and owner of Burns Blossom Farm in Chico, California. His passion for organic agriculture took root in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, where he was homeschooled by his mother, his first teacher. This early education ignited a lifelong commitment to small scale farming, which he shares with his wife, Mel, and daughter, Rosemary. With a focus on ecological practices, Kyle has cultivated crops from the rugged Mendocino Coast to the fertile Sacramento Valley, adapting his passion and expertise in agronomy with a genuine enthusiasm for sharing knowledge about food systems, regenerative practices, and, of course, snacking on his delicious harvests.

OVERVIEW: Are you ready to prepare your land for the future in the face of our changing climate? We've partnered with American Farmland Trust to help you with your climate adaptation journey.

This free webinar is for farmers and landowners who want to start taking action to plan for the ongoing and future impacts of climate change. We will briefly overview climate impacts on vegetable and flower farms nationwide, including precipitation and temperature trends. Then, we'll explore how to approach climate adaptation planning and available tools you can choose from. Two farmers who have started climate adaptation practices on their farms will join us: Sal Daggett of Stubborn Oak Farmstead in Wisconsin will share their process in evaluating risks and making a climate adaptation plan; Kyle Burns of Burns Blossom Farm will discuss adaptation practices he uses on his farm in California.

The presentation will run approximately 60 minutes, followed by a Q&A session where our presenters will answer questions from the audience.
