Sunn Hemp Cover Crop Seed

Product ID:5200.365200

New! Warm-season legume with high biomass potential.

Quick-growing once established, sunn hemp can produce over 100 lb. of nitrogen and 5,000 lb. of biomass per acre in 60–90 days. Heat-loving and tolerant of drought or poor soils, sunn hemp is a great choice for the hottest parts of the year and performs particularly well in warm climates. On our research farm in central Maine, it is often mixed with millet or sudangrass for a summer mix that outcompetes weeds, generates tremendous biomass, and fixes ample nitrogen. Sunn hemp will winter kill, though it may be best to mow it to prevent the stems from becoming too fibrous. Seed 1/2–1" deep at 30–50 lb./acre alone, or 4–8 lb./acre in a mix. Inoculate with EXCEED Cowpea, Sunn Hemp, Mung Bean, and Peanut Inoculant (#6354) for best performance.
