Teff Cover Crop Seed
Teff Cover Crop Seed
New! Fast-growing cover crop used to suppress weeds.
A warm-season grass that grows very quickly in the summer heat. When seeded at 8–12 lb./acre, it produces a dense stand capable of outcompeting many summer annual weeds. Withstands regular mowing and traffic, performing well as a living mulch between plastic beds or underneath a mature crop canopy. It is frost sensitive and seeds will not overwinter in cold climates, so volunteer establishment is of little concern. The fine leaves and stems break down quickly and can be managed with or without tillage. Due to its small size and low seeding rates, seed is coated and can also be mixed with a carrier such as sand or rice hulls to make sowing easier. Teff benefits from a shallow sowing ( 1/8– 1/4") into a firm seedbed. Teff is coated with OMRI Listed® Pinnacle Green.Specs:

Uses: Quick, dense growth outcompetes summer annual weeds. Good tolerance of heat and drought, so a good candidate for midsummer sowing. Tolerates mowing, so works well for living mulch between plastic beds.
Culture: Teff requires a firm seedbed, so roll or press soil with a cultipacker before broadcasting seed on the soil's surface. If using a grain drill, set depth no more than ¼" and reduce down pressure. Wait until soil has warmed to 65°F (18°C), as teff is a warm season grass. Seed is coated due to its small size. Can be mixed with a carrier such as rice hulls or sand to ensure even seed distribution.
Seeding Rate: ¼ lb./1,000 sq.ft.; 8–12 lb./acre
Light/Soil Requirements: Teff prefers a firm seedbed with a pH between 6.0–6.5. It is tolerant of many soil types, though prefers a well-drained, friable soil.
Height: 24–36"
Harvest: Teff's fine texture and palatability make it a good candidate for hay. Due to its quick regrowth, multiple cuttings can be expected each season when growing conditions are favorable.
Termination: Teff is not frost tolerant, so will winterkill reliably. Tillage can be effective but may require multiple passes and becomes less effective as the crop matures. Tarping for 2–3 weeks can also effectively terminate teff.
